About California Poppies

The California Poppy, Eschscholzia californica, graces many a sun-drenched meadow throughout California and the Southwest with its brilliant orange, saucer-shaped flowers. On bright days, the poppy's silky petals open to greet the sun. At dusk, the golden blooms close into tightly fluted repose. Eschscholzia californica, was first described to the scientific community in the early 19th Century by a German naturalist, Adelbert von Chamisso. Since then, the flower has gained admirers the world-over, becoming the State Flower of California in 1890, and winning the hearts of gardeners everywhere with its welcoming beauty and the ease with which it grows.

Always friendly and neat in appearance a popular flower to press the California Poppy features a compact, upright form, lifting its famous orange blooms 12 to 18 inches above a finely cut bed of lacy, bluish-green foliage. In milder climates that resemble its native California, the poppy is a perennial, blooming throughout the spring and summer, reseeding itself freely and generously. In colder regions, poppies must be reseeded by hand each spring in preparation for their summer colorburst. A swath of California Poppies brings a vivacious splash of color to virtually any open, sunny area, and they are as fun to grow as they are lovely!

There's enough seed here to plant an entire meadow full of poppies — almost 30,000 seeds in all! Scattered in an informal, wildflower planting, this seed will cover about 1,400 square feet, or an area roughly 38' x 38'. Approximately 70% of these seeds will germinate.

About Rocky Mountain Columbine

Aguilegia coerulea was first documented in 1820 by the famous mountain climber Edwin James on top of Pike’s Peak. The Columbine’s scientific name is derived from the Latin “Aquila,” meaning “eagle,” for the flower’s rear spurs, which resemble the talons of an eagle. Over 70 species of Aquilegia exist worldwide, ranging in color from bright red, yellow, and orange, to shades of lavender and purple.

Native Americans crushed the seeds and roots of the Columbine to treat headaches, fevers, rashes, heart problems, and sore throats. Native men are also said to have used the flower as an ingredient in a love charm. The Columbine was named the State Flower of Colorado in 1891 after schoolchildren voted it their favorite flower.

This grow kit contains approx. 0.25 oz of 100% pure Aquilegia coerulea seed — enough to plant over 100 square feet of flowers!

About Shasta Daisies

The seeds of Shasta Daisies are small, but mighty! There is enough seed in this grow kit to cover an area of roughly 500 square feet with an explosion of beautiful blooms (that’s an area larger than 20 feet long by 20 feet wide). There are approximately 1,600 individual seeds here, and most will germinate if the conditions are right. Each successful seed will produce a tidy clump of dark green foliage approximately a foot across with bright flowers shooting skyward on sturdy stems 2 – 3 feet tall.

There is no need to plant all your daisies in one plot unless you want an impressive field of pure flowers. You can also orchestrate clumps of these beauties here and there by planting accents strategically around your yard or property. Or, put them into pots, planter boxes, or other containers for a burst of brightness on your patio, porch, or front steps. Choose where you plant carefully, because, if the Shasta Daisies are happy where you are, they may re-seed themselves year after year and could be with you for more than the original plant’s 3 – 5 year lifespan.

About Edible Nasturtiums

You can live pretty much anywhere from Antarctica to the subtropics and still grow and enjoy nasturtiums!

With the ability to thrive across vastly different climates, Tropaeolum majus (better known as common or garden nasturtium), brings its unique beauty to yards, trellises, and planter boxes from areas with punishing, near arctic-level winter temperatures (-50°F) to regions at the opposite extreme, in the warmest range of all growing zones. This amazing flexibility is just the beginning of the many commendable qualities of the humble nasturtium.

There are more than 200 nasturtium seeds included in this Grow Kit. That is enough seed to plant an area of roughly 225-square feet.
